Stripes Crochet Phone Bag (with hidden pouch)

Stripes Crochet Phone Bag (with hidden pouch)

This is such a handy crochet bag as it allows you to carry just your phone and earphones when that is all you need.

The phone bag pattern is an altered version of the one poseted on My Hobby is Crochet (this site is helpful as it also has pictures to illustrate instructions).

Materials:

You can use any wool (I used 4 colours for the trinity stitch rounds, you can use more or fewer colours as per your needs). Be sure to use the suggeted crochet hook. I used:

  • Knit Picks Shine Worsted
    • Colour A = Sailor
    • Colour B = Sky
    • Colour C = Willow
    • Colour D = Blush
    • Colour E = French Blue
  • US E hook 3.5 mm
  • Sissors
  • Yarn needle

BAG Instructions:

*You will need to adjust the instructions depending on the size of your device. I suggest you check your sizing regularily to enure proper fit. I have underlined the instruction where you may want to adjust to your needs.

SC Pattern: (first 2 3rds):

Row 1: Using colour A, make a slip knot and chain 17.

Measure to the width of your device (adjust according to the size of your device, do not strench the yarn when measuring against device and be sure to include an extra 2-4 chains ro allow slide in and our room).

Row 2: skip first Ch. SC along side of the chain. When you get to the end of the row place a stitch marker (the tail of your slip knot will indicate which marker is the begining of your work). Chain 1 and turn.

SC other side of chain. Place another stitch maker and chain and turn (you are now crocheting in the round).

* doing it this way will negate the need to sew up the botton of the bag.

Row 3: Repeat row 2, chaining when you hit the markers.

Round 4-22: Continue in the round until you have completed 2/3rds of the bag. Cut colour A but leave a finger length tail.

Adding on a new colour: Using new colour, wrap around crochet hook (leaving a finger length tail) and pull through loop already on crochet hook. Pull old colour’s tail to tighten.

You now have one loop of the new colour on your hook. (Be sure to wrap the worked wool around the tails to weave them in as you crochet).

Trinity Stitch Round Pattern:

*see original pattern for a step by step tutorial of this stitch

Round 1: Colour B

First trinity crochet: Wrap yarn around crochet hook to create a 2nd loop. Insert hook into next two stitchs and pull through creating 2 new loops. You should have 4 loops on your hook. Loop yarn around hook and pull through all 4 loops. Chain 1.

This is a starting trinity cluster.

Rest of row: You have one loop on your hook. Pull through a 2nd yarn using the last stitch. You now have 2 loops on your hook. Insert hook into next two stitchs and pull through. You now have 4 loops on your hook. Loop yarn around hook and pull through all 4 loops. (This is a continuing trinity cluster.) Chain 1. Repeat untill you get to the last cluster.

Last cluster of the row: Complete the cluster and chain into the 1st cluster. Change to next colour.

Rounds 2-4: Repeat as above, switching to new colour each round.

SC crochet Pattern (last 3rd):

Rows 27-37: Add in Colour A and SC in the round until your bag reaches a few rows above your required size (dependent on your device’s size).

*Button Closure: As my bag is tight enough around my device I did not add in a button closure. Feel free to refer to the original pattern for instructions if you choose to include one.

Strap:

You should have a loop on your hook on the side of the project where you orginally began. Fold your bag along the natural lines caused by crotching in the round.

Row 1: Crotchet until you are two stitches past the fold. Chain 1 and turn.

Row 2130: Skip the first stitch. Crotchet into the next 3 sitiches. Chain and turn. Repeat until you have reach your desired length. Fasten off.

*I wanted my bag to cross over my chest and rest on my hip, so the strap is really long. You can make it as short or as long as you like. I suggest you try it on regularily to ensure that it meets your needs.

Attaching the strap: I put the edge of the strap agains the edge of the bage and SC them together, but you can sew them together if you prefer.

*If you would like to add a colour edging to the strap, attach the colour of your choice and SC around the bag and strap. Use the same colour or choose a different colour and do the same on the other side of the bag.

Earphone holder (CROCHET A CIRCLE):

* 2SC = two single crochet into same stitch

*choose to use Colour A so that the earphone pouch is hidden. Or alternate colours to make the pouch a colourful design feature.

Round 1: Make a slip knot and chain 2. Make 6 SC into the 2nd chain from the hook. Chain 1. (6 stiches) Add a stitch marker.

*I use a difffernt coloured piece of yarn and threaded it up through the circle everytime I added a chain at the end of the round to help me keep track of where the round ends.

Round 2: Skip the first stitch. 2SC to end of round. Chain 1. (12 stitches)

Round 3: Skip the first stitch. 2SC in next stitch. Alternate using SC and 2SC until the end of round. Chain 1. (18 stitches)

Row 4: SC, SC, 2SC until end of round. Chain 1.

*You can grow your cirlce as big as you need. For each additional row add another SC eg. round 5 would be SC, SC, SD, 2SC.

2nd to last round (making the earphone slit): Chain 8 stitches (adjust the number of stitches according to how big you need the slit to be). SC into the 6th stitch. SC until the end of the round.

Last round: SC to end of round. Fasten often off.

Attaching circle: Sew circle onto the bag. Circle should not lay flat. This allows space for the earphones to sit.
